چکیده

Sedimentologic, paleogeographic, stratigraphic, structural and tectonic studies in a paleo/mesoproterozoic metasedimentary succession (Espinhaço Megasequence, southeastern Brazil) indicates deposition in a rift-sag basin. Four basin evolution stages are recognized (prerift, rift, transitional and flexural). The four stages can be represented by six unconformity-bounded tectonosequences. The unconformities are recognized in the field and mappable even on a regional scale. The prerift and rift stages of the Espinhaço basin were filled by products of continental depositional systems. The prerift stage probably represents the first product of the rifting process, before the development of the half-grabens that characterize the rift stage. During the rift stage, mechanical subsidence due to lithospheric stretching was predominant and led to episodic rising of the depositional base level. As a result, the basin fill is characterized by coarsening-upward intervals. Paleocurrent patterns indicate that block tilting and half-graben subsidence/uplift controlled sediment dispersion. The first marine incursion within the Espinhaço basin marks the change in the subsidence regime of the basin. The evolution of the transitional and flexural stages was probably controlled by thermal subsidence due to thermal contraction of the lithosphere during cooling. The transitional stage was characterized by relatively low subsidence rates. Higher subsidence rates and a consequent sea-level rise characterize the flexural stage of the Espinhaço basin, in which three second-order transgressive-progradational sequences can be recognized. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Analyses both support and are in opposition to the hypothesis that the Martian meteorite ALH84001 contains evidence for possible biogenic activity on Mars. New observations in two additional Martian meteorites, Nakhla (1.3 Ga old) and Shergotty (300–165 Ma old) indicate possible biogenic features. Features in the three Martian meteorites compare favorably with the accepted criteria for terrestr...

Ð Although there has been a considerable growth of private seed enterprises in developing countries, there are few examples of the private delivery of seed of public crop varieties that are not hybrids. This paper discusses the example of rice in Andhra Pradesh, where private enterprise is supplying an increasing proportion of the seed used by farmers. The institutional conditions for private e...

Previous studies have shown that the 2.04 Ga Kangâmiut dyke swarm of SW Greenland was injected into an active tectonic environment associated with the formation of the Nagssugtoqidian orogenic belt. Major and trace element modelling of the swarm shows that its chemical evolution was controlled by simple clinopyroxene–plagioclase fractionation. However, such trends — although typical of continen...

A system of n asexual populations is considered where both intraand interspecific frequency-dependent game conflicts with lack of information take place. The concept of a strict n-species ESS is introduced which implies local asymptotic stability of the replicator dynamics of pure phenotypes. The dynamical concept of strict stability is also introduced which turns out to be equivalent to the st...

The Ophiolite Terrane of the Southern Chewore Inliers is comprised of two related, but lithologicallyand geochemically-distinct groups. The Maunde Ophiolite Group comprises a suite of lithologies similar to those within Phanerozoic ophiolites. The Kaourera Island Arc Group contains a suite of silica-variable, extrusive lithologies similar to those within present-day island-arcs. Geochemical ana...
